Brainstorming Techniques as New Product Developmen

When developing new products and strategies, coming up with unique ideas is often a struggle. It is one of the reasons why, in any industry, there is so much repetition. One way to generate new ideas and "get the creative juices flowing" is by completing brainstorming exercises using props. There are several ways to incorporate brainstorming into a new product development session. Two of my favorite techniques are skimming business publications and utilizing goodie bags.

What is Brainstorming?
According to dictionary.com, brainstorming is: 1) A method of shared problem solving in which all members of a group spontaneously contribute ideas or 2) A similar process undertaken by a person to solve a problem by rapidly generating a variety of possible solutions.

In action, brainstorming should be uncensored. No idea is dumb or impossible. In an organization, throw titles out the window. The janitor's ideas have the same validity as the CEO's. When implementing the brainstorming techniques below, try to pretend you know nothing about what is (or is not) possible. Write down ideas as they come up, no matter how outlandish. The task at hand is to free-associate, generating as many ideas as you can.

Brainstorming with "Goodie Bags"
There's nothing more boring than a sterile conference room. Yet, this is where many new product development sessions take place. To liven the atmosphere, you need a springboard...stimuli to get the ideas flowing.

One technique for providing stimuli is to gather miscellaneous items into "goodie bags" and have brainstorming groups sort through them, writing down ideas as they occur. As seasonal Marketing Manager for Nestl�'s Sunmark Division several years ago, I used this technique to hold a very productive new product development brainstorming session. In preparation, we filled colorful gift bags with small items that would stimulate new product ideas because of their texture, taste, appearance, ingredients, sound, or smell.

In the meeting, we divided the team into sub-groups of three to four people and gave each a bag. After digging through the bags, discussing, and writing down ideas, each group gave a small presentation. We came out of the meeting with many more great ideas than we could implement that year and it was fun for everyone involved.

Brainstorming with Business Publications and Trade Journals
If you do not have a group to work with, try using business newspapers and prominent trade journal as springboards for generating ideas. These can be effective brainstorming tools for several reasons:

The general publications contain articles about several industries, which is good for brainstorming new ideas that can apply to your own industry.
Marketing techniques and strategies discussed in the journals can help you brainstorm new marketing ideas of your own.
In publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the editors include a mix of short articles (good for brainstorming ideas based on what others are doing) and in-depth reports (good for brainstorming new product development strategies that grow from trends).
By skimming a variety of business related articles (news articles, features, human interest, and analytical pieces) you broaden your idea base, which results in more new product ideas.
Additionally, many print publications have integrated the Internet into their traditional business models. Besides offering both online and offline versions, many provide email alert services. Because they have successfully integrated online marketing into their own business, writers and editors are able to intelligently address both online and offline strategies, which in turn will create a more productive brainstorming session for you.
Applying the Techniques
Both trade journals and goodie bags can be used for other strategies besides new product development. They can also be used as techniques to generate ideas for online products and services, new marketing strategies, business taglines, and more.

Whether brainstorming alone or in a group, remember two rules - 1) no censoring and 2) use props as springboards for new ideas. Do this and your brainstorming session is sure to be a success.

The Four Basic Pillars of Successful Marketing

In 1964 Neil Borden published an article describing the concept of the marketing mix. In that article, Borden described the criteria that are within the control of the marketer, as well as how decisions related to each criterion affect the target market. This concept became known as the "four P's" of marketing. The four P's refer to Product, Price, Place and Promotion.

The four P's is a crucial concept that ultimately determines your success or failure. Together, they form the basis of your Market Mix. The decisions you make for each of the four criteria identify your target market. You can't effectively create a marketing campaign if you don't fully understand who your target audience is. Conversely, if you know your target market beforehand, you need to adjust the approach for each of the criteria in order to successfully reach that market. Simply taking a "shotgun" approach doesn't work.

Let's use Nike as an example. Nike understood that their target was primarily sports oriented young people (teens and young adults). What if Nike had used former Senator Bob Dole as their spokesman rather than Michael Jordan? Would their marketing campaign have succeeded? It's unlikely that seeing Bob Dole run around a basketball court in Nike shoes would have been an effective marketing approach.

On the other hand, Pfizer did use Bob Dole for their Viagra marketing campaign. Pfizer had a completely different target market from Nike. That target, middle-aged men, could relate to Dole. He also brought a level of acceptance to the idea of taking Viagra: "if it's good enough for Bob, it's good enough for me".

Successful businesses understand their target market, and how to effectively reach them.

Let's now examine each of the four P's and their effect on the overall marketing mix.


PRODUCT
As it relates to the marketing mix, product can refer to any business sector: sales of physical items, services, training, consulting, or Internet Marketing. Product is whatever your business provides.

A key component of the product criteria is branding. Whether it's shampoo, bicycles, or any other product, studies have shown that people generally purchase products they are familiar with. When you go to the store to buy shampoo, do you just pick up the first product you see or do you buy a specific brand?

The same applies to other business sectors. As a result of a very aggressive marketing campaign, The University of Phoenix has become known as a leader in the field of online continuing education. Let's presume you wanted to take such classes to further your education or obtain your degree. If you did a Google search for "online education", the result would be page after page of potential options. Included in that list would be the University of Phoenix, as well as many others you have most likely never heard about. Given the name recognition, which of those links would you most likely click on first? It's all about branding.

Another consideration within the product criteria is quality. No matter how successful the Nike marketing campaign, if their shoes fell apart after just a week or two there would be no repeat sales. Customer loyalty is achieved by having a quality product. Offering a substandard product is not a formula for long-term success.

Ongoing support is another crucial element. Even a company with a quality product will suffer if support for that product is difficult to obtain. The support issue is more of a factor in some business areas (e.g., consumer electronics) than others, but it can't be overlooked. Several of the computer providers that were at the top of the list for sales a few years ago are now down in the middle of the pack. Not surprisingly, their decline in sales coincided with their decline in customer support. People remember painful experiences. Customer support should be an integral part of your marketing mix.

The way you package your product is also important. Whether it is warranted or not, people often buy products with the most attractive packaging. Packaging includes everything from the physical box a product comes in to the design of your web site. Image matters.

One way to have your product stand out from those of your competition is to offer additional features, accessories or services. Doing this may increase your cost, but it can also increase your sales. It is yet one more decision to consider as you develop your marketing mix.

PRICING
One of the trickiest aspects of determining your marketing mix is pricing. There is generally some flexibility with this component, but it should not be considered in isolation.

One of the critical factors of course is anticipated volume. If you can offer your product at a lower price than your competitors, that certainly gives you an edge in your marketing approach. On the other hand, the price you charge must also provide you a realistic opportunity to make a viable profit margin.

Keep in mind; your overall cost for the product is not just your wholesale price. Your cost also includes operational expenses such as telephone lines, web hosting services, accountant fees, and so on.

You can't afford to take a knee-jerk, emotional approach to setting a low price just to beat your competition. You must weigh the decrease in profit margin with the increase in sales volume. Selling your product lower than the competition with little or no margin is not the route to a successful business. The price points you identified in your business plan should be used as a guide. You did do a business plan right?

One of the major areas of pricing flexibility comes with "bundling". When I ran a hardware sales business in the early 90s, I made a calculated decision to sell memory cards at my cost when I bundled them with motherboards. While I made no profit on the memory cards in the bundle, I did increase the volume of motherboard sales.

Volume discounts for your customers is another possible option to consider. Obviously, doing this will depend on the type of product you sell. But using my hardware sales experience an example, I offered my customers volume discount pricing on most hardware items when purchased in lots of 3, 5, or 10+. The decrease in profit margin for each unit was offset by the increase in volume.

My recommendation would be to do market research to determine the lowest and highest prices for the same product offered by your competitors. With that information, and in conjunction with other relevant criteria, you can find your ideal price point.



PLACE
The "place" component originated with the famous marketing adage of "location, location, location". In today's world, especially with the availability of the Web, it really has more to do with distribution channels, market coverage, and payment methods.

In terms of the distribution channel, the question relates to how you will get the product to your customers. If you anticipate selling your product online to large numbers of people, do you have the resources to package and ship these yourself, or should you consider a 3rd party alternative?

As a general rule of thumb, people who purchase products online expect to have those products delivered within 3-5 days. A delay beyond that timeframe is not conducive to repeat sales. If you aren't able to meet that requirement you should consider using one of the many 3rd party companies that will do that for you.

Of course, if your product is software or some other electronic format material (such as an eBook) the question of distribution is greatly simplified. Products such as these can easily be transferred to the customer directly over the Internet.

Depending on your type of business, your distribution channel may also relate to your physical location. A business in Bangor, Maine that offers dog-grooming services isn't going to be concerned about providing that service to someone in Phoenix, Arizona. In such a case, the entire marketing mix strategy should be focused on geographic location.

The Market Coverage element identifies another aspect of product distribution. Do you plan to offer your product exclusively, or will you have resellers, secondary distributors and/or affiliates in other parts of the country or world? This decision is largely a factor of your business model as well as the type of product. The exclusive distribution model allows all profits to come directly to you. Using resellers or affiliates dilutes your direct profit, but increases your potential coverage area.

The Payment Method element includes a number of factors, most of which are also dependent on your business model. For instance, a company that offers online training or consulting may offer payment plans. One that provides an ongoing service (e.g., a Traffic Exchange) would typically utilize recurring payments. A company that sells physical products (e.g., computer hardware) would generally require payment in advance.

If you plan to sell items on your web site, as opposed to just providing information about a service (e.g., dog-grooming), you need to accept online payments (credit cards, direct deposit, et cetera). Very few people are going to go to a product site to make a purchase and then put a check in the mail; they will just go to one of your competitors. The more payment options you give people, the more likely they are to buy. You also want to allow for the fact that people are prone to impulse purchases. Make it simple for them.

PROMOTION
Product promotion is where all the other elements of the marketing mix coalesce. Promotion is not just about the product. It is about getting across the message you wish to convey. It includes several key elements: "push" vs. "pull", branding and image, and advertising.

The "push" part of promotion is simply making information about your product or service available. While this is obviously important, your primary focus should be on the "pull" aspect. Putting this concept in simple terms, don't just sell to people; make THEM want to buy from you. Whatever product you offer, make people think about your company first when they require that product. Better yet, make them want the product even when they don't need it.

A large part of an effective "pull" strategy is branding. You want to make your business synonymous with your product. You also want to associate a specific image to your target market audience. I've already spoken about the campaign Nike put in place. Do you even remember seeing one of their shoes in the ad? Their goal in that campaign was to portray an image: success in sports.

Consider other successful marketing campaigns: the "Marlboro Man" portraying an image of the rugged, self-sufficient man; the Prudential Rock, with its implication of solid stability; and Salomon Smith Barney with the "earn it the old fashioned way" projection of respect and integrity. It's all about image.

Many times, the branding applied to a product has nothing to do with the product itself. As with all marketing, the intent is to provide a unique, easy to remember identity. Consider the AFLAC Duck. A duck has as much to do with insurance as, well, as a duck has to do with insurance. But when you see the duck you immediately know the product. The same applies to Budweiser's Spuds McKenzie and the GEICO Gecko.

FINAL THOUGHTS
All too many people confuse advertising with sales. They are not the same. Advertising is important but it is only a subset of successful marketing. You use advertising to get your message out. It's what's in that message that is key however.

The components of that message (image, brand recognition, etc.) are what successful marketing is all about. A thorough understanding of the marketing mix can most effectively help to identify, and refine, those components.

The marketing mix, earlier known as the 4 p's, (but now has a few more), is a vital part of any marketing strategy. This is a tool whereby the marketer takes decisions on what and how a product should be, where it can be sold, how it should be priced, how it will be promoted, how to equip the people who are responsible for selling the product… and so on. Getting the marketing mix right is equally important for the large corporation and the small business owner. Let us take a closer look at the 5 most important elements.


Product: Well, surely that's what it's all about, isn't it? A lot of thought and effort goes into designing a product offering. The most important question that you, as a marketer, need to ask is whether there is a need for your type of product and how your own product satisfies that need better than those of your competitors. This will force you to think of why your product is unique, and thereby help you evolve your product's Unique Selling Proposition. At the same time, you will need to analyze your company's strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities and threats posed by the market, to understand how you are positioned versus the competition.

Price: This element of the marketing mix can be many a strategy's undoing. A complete understanding of the financials that drive a business is essential before deciding a pricing strategy. Base your decision after considering the following - what is the perceived value of your product in the eyes of the customer? How price elastic is the market? Do you wish to load overheads on to the new product, if an existing product line is capable of absorbing them? What is your objective - do you plan to gain market share on the strength of a rock bottom price or do you wish to create a premium image targeted at niche customers and price your product accordingly?

Place: This is probably that element of the marketing mix that has undergone a complete change in definition. Traditional trading and distribution models have given way to remote or virtual channels. While reaching the customer may have become simpler, your job as a decision maker has become that much more complex. You now have a plethora of options to choose from - do you go for brick and mortar or direct mailing, use the phone or sell door to door? This decision should, first and foremost, be driven by customer preference and then by other considerations like logistics and economics. Indeed most businesses rely on a multi distribution channel strategy.

Promotion: In a commoditized industry, this is what makes the essential difference. Possibly no other marketing mix element draws as much attention from strategy makers. Again, let consumer needs drive your efforts. Does your marketing communication address a specific need of the target audience? Is the message memorable? Does it spur action? Here again, the entire landscape has changed from what it was a few years ago. Promotion has gone way beyond mere advertising and public relations - it is now a highly evolved process, ranging from live events to internet marketing. In these times of information overload, promotion strategies must pack sufficient punch to cut through the clutter.

People: Although a later entrant to the marketing mix family, the people decision is no less important. Indeed, in service oriented businesses, it may well be the key determinant of success. No strategy is complete unless the people who are in charge of implementing it have the wherewithal to do so. This means investing in sales force training, ensuring a customer relationship management system is in place and building a customer centric culture throughout the organization.

Remember also that the marketing mix is a dynamic entity and needs to be reviewed and refined periodically. It always helps to stay in touch with the latest developments and current expert opinion. or should have what you're looking for in terms of books and other resources.

One of the biggest mistakes new immigrants to Canada make when attempting to enter into the Canadian job market is continuing to use the résumé from their home countries. It is important that newly arrived jobseekers tailor their résumés towards meeting the needs of Canadian employers.
As the President of Résumé Solutions, I have worked with 1000s of new immigrants who came to our organization for help when they have been unable to find work for months after arriving in Canada. One of the most common errors that we see in their résumés is spelling and grammatical mistakes. Another mistake is including obsolete information or detail, which has no relevance to a Canadian employer. Others include too much personal information, which is a major faux pas in the Canadian environment.
Even though Canadian labour laws prohibits its employers from discriminating against job seekers based on issues such as age, marital status or religion, it would be naïve to assume that all employers adhere to the law at all times. With this in mind, it is best not to mention your age in your résumé or cover letter. There is always the possibility that you could be discriminated against should the employer feel you are too young or too old for the position.
To be effective, a well-written résumé should be concise and to the point. You should not write a résumé that consists of a laundry list of responsibilities for each role you have held throughout your career. Though many immigrants come from countries where longer, detailed résumés are the norm, a résumé written for the Canadian employer should be no longer than three pages (two is preferable). While writing your résumé, you need to remember that your main goal is to convey to a prospective employer the contributions you made in each of your past roles and how you can replicate these success for their organization. Do not use long-winded sentences or dated terminology. Is the pharmacist job market getting better?

More job opportunities are opening up for pharmacists, as pharmacies & companies are more interested in hiring, compared to late 2009. Positions are getting filled quickly in areas saturated by pharmacists, especially those that are staff level ones with desired shifts. It is positive to see some pharmacies ready to hire again, and who are quick to make decisions. Pharmacists are having to beat their competition to the punch, because once a coveted position becomes available, pharmacies are being flooded with applicants.

On the flip side, other pharmacies are taking extra care in waiting for the right pharmacist, more so than in the past. I know one hospital that waited 8 months to find the right critical care pharmacist, and another that waited months for the right candidate for a clinical coordinator position. They were waiting for someone who is cream of the crop.

Even staff pharmacist roles are not immune to this type of extra selectivity and hiring managers waiting for the right person. One pharmacy in Northern California has had a staff pharmacist opening for a few months. Despite receiving many qualified applicants, the pharmacy director chose to hold off on hiring until finding someone who is the perfect candidate.

Clinical specialists in high demand include oncology pharmacists. I forsee this continuing to be a trend. Last year's PGY2 oncology residency programs didn't have enough residents for the available spots. Yet companies have a growing need for pharmacists of this specialty. I've had a lot of requests from hospitals for oncology pharmacist positions lately.

Other clinical pharmacy specialists like infectious disease are still in demand, but they may be more limited in terms of geographic areas that you can move into. Last year, for example, there were several infectious disease pharmacist openings in New York City. Now, an infectious disease opening is hard to come by.

Pharmacy directors are also sought after. I suppose not everyone wants to take on the responsibility of this role.

Federal pharmacist jobs such as those with the Indian Health Service and Veteran's Affairs are becoming more popular, as pharmacists look for stability in this uncertain economy.

Pharmaceutical company layoffs seem to have been slowing down, according to MedZilla Report. But continue to expect layoffs. For example, Eli Lily plans to cut 5,500 jobs worldwide by the end of 2011. Two big mergers have called for massive layoffs. Merck & Schering-Plough merger led to plans for 16,000 job cuts. Pfizer & Wyeth's merger called for 20,000 layoffs.

If you are looking for a job right now and are PGY1 residency trained without additional experience, fewer pharmacies (compared to last year) are willing to wait and hire you on before finishing a residency, unless you are already a resident at the facility, have connections, or the position is in a less saturated geographic area. Many pharmacies are preferring to hire a pharmacist on immediately when they have an opening. In high-demand areas with many pharmacist applicants, you may still get interviewed, but when it comes down to it, if they have other pharmacist applicants ready to work with equal or more credentials and a similar fit as you, they would hire that person on instead. If you're not getting offers right now, that may be the reason why.



If you have something special to offer and are PGY1 residency trained, you can still get offers if what you are pursuing is in alignment with your experience during your residency and you market yourself well to show that off in your application process (including the first impression you make with your resume).

Resumes of new pharmacy grads and residents often look similar. Every new grad has done rotations. What is it that's special about your experience from other new grads? As a resident, what is it that makes what you learned during your residency or the accomplishments that you had different from other residents? What is unique about what you bring to the pharmacy and what is your 10-second summary of why you are more deserving than other applicants?

It's all about how you market yourself to stand out, from the beginning of your application process when you make your first impression, send a resume that gets noticed, ace the interview, "close on the job", and negotiate the best offer.

There are things you can do which most pharmacists are not doing, and which can give you better results. Blasting out your resume and "hoping" to hear back is not a strategy working well in this job market. Marketing yourself to get noticed is something that I teach to pharmacists who want to take control back in their job search. It's something that if you put the effort to learning, you will get more interviews & offers.
